Review from Pestwebzine

Oh man, this is ridiculously good! Necroratory has been active since 2010, and “When We Die” is their fifth release, yet somehow this is my first encounter with their music, and I’m completely blown away. Technically, this would be considered an EP, clocking in at just 25 minutes across six tracks, but it’s presented as a full-length album, and honestly the impact is big enough to justify it. The music here is exceptional: old-school melodic Black Metal executed with conviction and precision. Intricate, expressive guitar work drives the compositions, supported by thunderous drumming and subtle, supportive bass lines. The vocal performance is especially striking, featuring a primary shrieking vocal that channels pure malevolence, occasionally countered by a deep growl that adds a layer of ominous depth to the soundscape. The guitar work truly stands out, each riff feels alive, etched into memory with a sense of drama and intent. There’s a melancholic undercurrent that permeates the atmosphere, but it’s handled tastefully, never veering into melodrama. When the band ramps up the speed and intensity (which is often) their music reveals a horrifying, venomous side that’s absolutely gripping. The production is crystal clear, perfectly balancing the raw aggression and the layered atmospheric elements, it brings out every nuance and gives the album a polished yet still sinister edge. Frankly, based on the quality of this record, it’s baffling that Necroratory isn’t more widely known or already at the forefront of the genre, but perhaps the lack of consistent touring plays a role. Regardless, they deserve an honorable place alongside Hungary’s finest: Sear Bliss, Bornholm, and Ahriman, while Thy Catafalque remains in a singular category of its own. “When We Die” is a masterclass in Melodic Black Metal done right: sinister, passionate, and full of character. Released by Fekete Terror on beautifully-looking cassette tape that comes with fully printed cassette shells, and an extensive booklet featuring all lyrics. A must have!
